Bar-Nes was a thief who lived on the island of Bokos on the planet Krypton. Many years ago, Bar-Nes learned that a young boy named Val-Mer had discovered a strange glowing rock in the Striped River. Believing that this rock was a source of great power, his partner Ta-Tem and he decided to fly to the city-state of Erkol and steal it. They attacked the Kryptonian Science Council and attempted to force them relinquish the stone, but Val-Mer took it, stole Bar-Nes' flyer and returned it to its place of origin where he fed it to a metal beast.
